A board and batten wall uses wide boards or a smooth wall surface with narrow vertical trim pieces called battens. The appearance depends heavily on consistent spacing. Even a small measurement error can become noticeable when repeated across an entire wall.

How batten spacing is calculated

When battens are installed on both wall edges, their combined width is removed from the wall width. The remaining space is divided equally between the gaps.

For an equal-margin layout, the calculator creates matching spaces at the left and right edges. This style can work well when the wall meets decorative trim, cabinetry, or another architectural feature.

What measurements should you use?

  • Measure the usable wall width after accounting for permanent obstructions.
  • Use the actual face width of the batten, not only its nominal lumber size.
  • Measure the height from the bottom rail to the top rail when rails overlap the battens.
  • Subtract large doors and windows from panel area when they will not be covered.
  • Add 10% to 15% extra material for cuts, defects, and installation mistakes.

Center-to-center spacing versus clear spacing

Clear spacing is the visible open distance between two battens. Center-to-center spacing measures from the center of one batten to the center of the next. Center-to-center spacing equals the clear gap plus one batten width.
