Formula

Concrete Bag Calculation Formula

The basic bag requirement is calculated by dividing the total concrete volume by the finished concrete yield of one bag. The result is rounded up because partial bags cannot normally be purchased.

Bags = Total Concrete Volume ÷ Yield per Bag Always round the final bag quantity up to the next whole bag.

If a waste allowance is included, that percentage is first added to the required project volume before the bag calculation is made.

Common Concrete Bag Sizes and Approximate Yield

Pre-mixed concrete is available in several bag sizes. Finished yield varies by product, but the following values are useful starting points for rough estimating.

Concrete Bag Calculation Example

Suppose your project requires 10 cubic feet of concrete and you plan to use 80 lb bags with an approximate yield of 0.60 cubic feet per bag.

10 ÷ 0.60 = 16.67 bags Round up to 17 bags before adding any waste allowance.

With a 10% waste allowance, the required volume becomes 11 cubic feet. Dividing 11 by 0.60 gives about 18.33, so the project would require 19 whole 80 lb bags.

Should You Add Extra Concrete Bags?

A calculated concrete volume represents ideal dimensions. Small losses during mixing, placement, cleanup, uneven excavation, and measurement differences can increase actual material use.

Adding a waste allowance provides a buffer so the project is less likely to run short during placement. The appropriate percentage depends on the job conditions and the accuracy of the original volume measurement.

Cubic Yards and Cubic Meters to Concrete Bags

Since most bag yields are shown in cubic feet, larger volume measurements must be converted before calculating the bag quantity. The calculator performs these conversions automatically.

1 m³ ≈ 35.3147 ft³ This conversion is used when cubic meters are selected.

How Much Do Concrete Bags Weigh?

The total dry material weight is calculated by multiplying the number of whole bags required by the selected bag weight. This can help with transportation and material-handling planning.

Total Dry Weight = Number of Bags × Bag Weight

This value represents the packaged dry mix only. The finished concrete will also contain added water, and actual handling requirements depend on the selected product and project conditions.
