What Do Fertilizer N-P-K Numbers Mean?
The three numbers printed on fertilizer represent the percentage by weight of nitrogen, phosphate expressed as P₂O₅, and potash expressed as K₂O.
For example, a 16-4-8 fertilizer contains 16% nitrogen, 4% phosphate, and 8% potash by weight.
How Is Fertilizer Quantity Calculated?
First, determine how much of the selected nutrient is required for the total treatment area. Then divide that nutrient requirement by the nutrient percentage in the fertilizer.
For a fertilizer containing 16% nitrogen, the nitrogen decimal is 0.16.
How Is the Total Nutrient Requirement Calculated?
In imperial mode, the nutrient application rate is entered per 1,000 square feet. The calculator multiplies that rate by the number of 1,000-square-foot units in the treatment area.
Metric mode uses kilograms of nutrient per 100 square meters.
Fertilizer Calculation Example
Suppose a lawn covers 5,000 square feet and the target is 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. The total nitrogen requirement is 5 pounds.
If the fertilizer is 16-4-8, it contains 16% nitrogen. Divide 5 pounds by 0.16 to calculate the fertilizer product required.
With a 5% allowance, the calculator estimates approximately 32.81 pounds of fertilizer.
How Are N, P₂O₅, and K₂O Supplied Calculated?
Once total fertilizer weight is known, the calculator multiplies that weight by each N-P-K percentage to show how much of each labeled nutrient is supplied.

How Many Bags of Fertilizer Do I Need?
Once the required fertilizer weight is calculated, divide it by the weight contained in one bag. Because fertilizer is normally purchased in complete bags, the result is rounded upward.
How Is Fertilizer Cost Calculated?
The bag-based estimate multiplies the number of whole bags by the entered price per bag.
The calculator also shows an exact-weight comparison using the required fertilizer weight and price per pound or kilogram.
Metric and Imperial Fertilizer Calculations
Imperial mode calculates treatment area in square feet and fertilizer in pounds. Nutrient application rates are entered as pounds per 1,000 square feet.
Metric mode calculates area in square meters and fertilizer in kilograms. Nutrient rates are entered as kilograms per 100 square meters.
Fertilizer Rate Should Match the Actual Application Plan
Fertilizer requirements vary by grass species, crops, soil fertility, season, irrigation, climate, soil-test results, fertilizer formulation, and the nutrient being targeted.
Applying more fertilizer than needed can damage plants and contribute to nutrient runoff. Use the product label and an appropriate soil or crop recommendation when selecting an application rate.
