What Is a Lumber Calculator?

A lumber calculator estimates the quantity of wood required for a project using the thickness, width, length, and number of boards. It converts the entered dimensions into board feet, cubic feet, and cubic meters.

Board feet are commonly used to measure hardwood and rough lumber. One board foot represents a piece of wood measuring 12 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 1 inch thick.

Board Feet = Thickness (in) × Width (in) × Length (ft) ÷ 12 × Quantity

The calculator also adds your waste percentage and estimates the material cost based on either a price per board foot or a price per piece.

How Much Extra Lumber Should You Buy?

A waste allowance helps cover cutting losses, damaged boards, knots, warping, incorrect cuts, and future repairs. For simple projects using straight cuts, 5% to 10% may be sufficient.

Projects involving angled cuts, complex layouts, hardwood grain matching, or boards with many defects may require 10% to 20% additional lumber.

  • 20%: Reclaimed wood or highly selective grain matching

Nominal Size vs Actual Size

Lumber labels often use nominal measurements. A board sold as 2 × 4 inches is generally smaller after drying and planing. Its actual dimensions are commonly around 1.5 × 3.5 inches.

Because board-foot calculations depend on physical wood volume, entering actual dimensions produces the most reliable estimate.

Example

Ten boards measuring 2 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 8 feet long equal 80 board feet before waste:

2 × 6 × 8 ÷ 12 × 10 = 80 board feet
