What Is a Military Time Converter?

A Military Time Converter changes standard 12-hour AM/PM time into 24-hour time and can also convert 24-hour military time back into standard time.

The 24-hour clock avoids the need for AM and PM because every hour of the day has a unique number. This makes it useful where clear and unambiguous time communication is important.

Example:

5:30 PM in standard time becomes 1730 in military-style notation.

How to Convert Standard Time to Military Time

AM Times

For most AM times, the hour remains the same and is written with two digits. For example, 7:15 AM becomes 0715.

Midnight is the important exception. 12:00 AM becomes 0000.

PM Times

For PM times from 1:00 PM through 11:59 PM, add 12 to the hour. For example, 3:30 PM becomes 1530.

Noon is an exception to the add-12 rule. 12:00 PM remains 1200.

Simple Rule:

1:00 PM → 1300
3:00 PM → 1500
8:30 PM → 2030
11:45 PM → 2345

Midnight and noon are two times that commonly cause confusion when converting between 12-hour and 24-hour formats.

Midnight: 12:00 AM = 00:00 = 0000

Noon: 12:00 PM = 12:00 = 1200

After noon, the 24-hour clock continues with 13:00 for 1:00 PM and progresses through 23:59 before returning to 00:00 at the beginning of the next day.

Where Is 24-Hour and Military Time Used?

The 24-hour clock is useful whenever avoiding AM/PM ambiguity is important. Usage conventions can differ between countries and organizations.
