Understanding Molarity

Molarity describes the concentration of a solution as the number of moles of dissolved solute per liter of total solution. Its standard unit is moles per liter, commonly written as mol/L or M.

The final solution volume must be used rather than only the volume of solvent. For example, a solute may be dissolved in part of the solvent and then diluted to an exact final volume in a volumetric flask.

Use total solution volume Molarity is based on the final volume after the solute and solvent have been combined.
Volume can change with temperature Molarity may change slightly when temperature changes because solution volume can expand or contract.
