What Is Power to Weight Ratio?

Power to weight ratio compares how much power is available for each unit of weight. A higher ratio usually means stronger acceleration, better responsiveness, and improved performance because there is more power moving less mass.

Why Power to Weight Ratio Matters

A vehicle with more horsepower is not always faster if it is also much heavier. Power to weight ratio gives a better performance picture because it includes both power and mass. This is why lightweight sports cars, motorcycles, and racing vehicles can feel faster than heavier vehicles with similar horsepower.

For example, a 300 HP car that weighs 1,200 kg has a stronger performance ratio than a 300 HP car that weighs 2,000 kg. The power is the same, but the lighter vehicle has less mass to move.
