What Is Slope?

Slope measures the steepness and direction of a straight line. It shows how much the line's vertical position changes for each unit of horizontal movement. In algebra, slope is usually represented by the letter m.

The vertical change between two points is the rise, while the horizontal change is the run. Dividing rise by run gives the line's slope.

How to Calculate Slope

  1. Choose two different points: (x1, y1) and (x2, y2).
  2. Find the rise by subtracting y1 from y2.
  3. Find the run by subtracting x1 from x2.
  4. Divide the rise by the run: m = rise / run.
Example: For (2, 4) and (8, 10), rise = 10 - 4 = 6 and run = 8 - 2 = 6. Therefore, the slope is 6 / 6 = 1.

Types of Slope

  • Positive slope: The line rises from left to right.
  • Negative slope: The line falls from left to right.
  • Zero slope: The line is horizontal and both y-values are equal.
  • Undefined slope: The line is vertical and both x-values are equal.
