What Is a Cumulative GPA Calculator?

A Cumulative GPA Calculator estimates your overall grade point average across multiple semesters. It combines your existing GPA record with grades and credit hours from new courses to calculate an updated cumulative GPA.

Unlike a semester GPA, which represents one academic term, cumulative GPA reflects eligible academic work completed over a longer period.

Previous GPA

Enter your existing cumulative GPA and the credits already included in that GPA.

New Courses

Add grades and credit hours from your latest semester or other new GPA-bearing courses.

Updated GPA

The calculator combines both academic records and displays your estimated new cumulative GPA.

How Is Cumulative GPA Calculated?

Your existing GPA represents quality points earned across your previously completed GPA credits. First, the calculator converts your current GPA back into estimated quality points.

Previous Quality Points = Current GPA × Previously Completed Credits

Each new course is then converted into quality points by multiplying its grade-point value by its credit hours.

New Course Quality Points = Grade Points × Course Credits

Finally, previous and new quality points are combined and divided by the combined number of credits.

Cumulative GPA = (Previous Quality Points + New Quality Points) ÷ Total Credits

Cumulative GPA Example

Suppose your current cumulative GPA is 3.40 across 60 credits.

Your previous quality points are:

3.40 × 60 = 204 quality points

If you then complete 12 new credits and earn 42 quality points during the new semester, your updated GPA would be:

(204 + 42) ÷ (60 + 12) = 3.42

Cumulative GPA vs. Semester GPA

Semester GPA measures performance during one academic term. Cumulative GPA combines eligible academic performance across multiple terms.

A strong semester can increase your cumulative GPA, while a semester GPA below your existing cumulative average may reduce the cumulative result.

Why Do Credit Hours Matter?

GPA is usually credit-weighted. This means a course with more credit hours contributes more to the overall GPA than a course with fewer credits. The same principle applies when combining previous and new academic records.

Grade Scale Used by This Calculator

New courses entered into this calculator use the following common 4.0 grade-point scale:

Important: Schools and universities may use different GPA scales and policies for repeated courses, transfer credits, pass/fail courses, withdrawals and other grades. Use this calculator as an estimate and check your institution's official policy when an exact GPA is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cumulative GPA?
Cumulative GPA is an overall grade point average calculated from eligible academic work completed across multiple terms or semesters.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Combine the quality points from your previous academic record with quality points from your new courses, then divide by the combined GPA-bearing credits.
Is cumulative GPA the same as semester GPA?
No. Semester GPA covers one academic term, while cumulative GPA generally combines eligible coursework from multiple academic terms.
Can one semester change my cumulative GPA?
Yes. New grades can increase or decrease your cumulative GPA. The amount of change depends on your previous credits, current GPA, new grades and new course credits.
Why do I need to enter my previous credits?
Your current GPA alone does not show how much coursework it represents. Previous credits are needed to estimate the quality points already included in your cumulative GPA.
Does every university calculate cumulative GPA the same way?
No. Educational institutions may use different grade scales, credit rules, repeat-course policies and other GPA calculation methods.
