What Is a Post Hole Concrete Calculator?
A post hole concrete calculator estimates how much concrete is needed around posts installed in cylindrical holes. It is useful for projects such as fences, decks, gates, signs, pergolas, and other post-supported structures.
The calculator first finds the volume of the hole and then subtracts the space occupied by the post. The resulting volume represents the approximate concrete needed around that post.
What Can This Calculator Estimate?
- Volume of one cylindrical post hole
- Volume displaced by a round or square post
- Concrete needed around one post
- Total concrete for multiple holes
- Additional concrete for waste allowance
- Cubic feet, cubic yards, or cubic meters
- Approximate concrete bag quantity
- Total dry bag weight
- Estimated bagged-concrete cost
How to Use the Post Hole Concrete Calculator
Measure the Hole
Enter the diameter and concrete-filled depth of the cylindrical post hole.
Enter Post Size
Select round or square post and enter its dimensions so the displaced volume can be deducted.
Calculate Material
Enter the number of holes, waste percentage, bag size, and optional price to estimate materials.
Post Hole Concrete Volume Formula
A typical post hole is treated as a cylinder. Its volume is calculated from the radius of the hole and the concrete-filled depth.
Because the post occupies part of that space, the post volume can be deducted to obtain a better estimate of the concrete surrounding it.
Concrete Around a Round Post
When a round post is installed inside a cylindrical hole, both the hole and post volumes are cylinders. The post diameter is used to calculate how much volume it displaces.
This calculator assumes that the post occupies the same vertical depth entered for the concrete-filled hole. If your actual embedment differs, adjust the dimensions accordingly.
Concrete Around a Square Post
For a square or rectangular post, the displaced space is calculated as a rectangular prism instead of a cylinder. Enter the actual post width and depth for the best quantity estimate.
Post Hole Concrete Calculation Example
Consider a 12-inch-diameter hole that is 3 feet deep with a 4-inch-diameter round post. The hole radius is 6 inches, or 0.5 feet, while the post radius is approximately 0.167 feet.
Subtracting the post gives approximately 2.09 cubic feet of concrete per hole before waste. Ten identical holes would require about 20.9 cubic feet before adding any allowance.
How Many Concrete Bags Are Needed for Post Holes?
Once the required concrete volume is known, it can be divided by the approximate finished yield of a bag. The calculator then rounds the result up to the next whole bag.
| Bag Size | Approximate Yield | Approximate Bags per yd³ |
|---|---|---|
| 40 lb | 0.30 ft³ | About 90 |
| 60 lb | 0.45 ft³ | About 60 |
| 80 lb | 0.60 ft³ | About 45 |
These yields are useful approximate values only. Concrete products can have different yields, so check the manufacturer's packaging before purchasing material.
Why Add Extra Concrete for Post Holes?
Excavated holes are rarely perfect cylinders. Loose soil, enlarged sections, irregular walls, mixing losses, and placement spillage can increase actual concrete use.
A waste allowance adds a user-selected percentage to the calculated quantity. This helps provide a more practical material estimate without assuming that every hole is exactly the entered size.
Metric and Imperial Post Hole Measurements
| Measurement | Imperial | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Hole Diameter | Inches | Centimeters |
| Post Dimensions | Inches | Centimeters |
| Hole Depth | Feet | Meters |
| Concrete Volume | ft³ / yd³ | m³ |
Concrete Quantity Is Not Post Foundation Design
This calculator only estimates the volume of concrete around dimensions already entered. It does not determine the correct hole diameter, embedment depth, post spacing, or foundation configuration.
Actual requirements can depend on soil conditions, structural loads, wind, frost depth, drainage, uplift, lateral loading, post material, project type, and applicable codes. Use appropriate project guidance or qualified professional input when structural performance matters.
Post Hole Concrete Calculator FAQs
Calculate the cylindrical volume of the hole using π × radius² × depth, then subtract the volume occupied by the post when appropriate.
Yes. You can select either a round or square post and enter its dimensions. You can also select No Post Deduction if you prefer to estimate using the full hole volume.
Yes. Enter the number of identical holes and the calculator multiplies the concrete requirement by that quantity.
Yes. Select a 40 lb, 60 lb, or 80 lb bag and the calculator estimates how many whole bags are needed.
Yes. Enter your preferred waste allowance percentage and it is added to the total concrete volume before bag calculations.
Yes. Metric mode accepts hole and post dimensions in centimeters, depth in meters, and returns the main concrete volume in cubic meters.
No. It estimates concrete for the dimensions you enter. Required depth depends on the project, loads, local conditions, and applicable construction requirements.
