Shift Start 09:00
Shift End 17:30
Total Minutes Worked 480 minutes
Shift Type Same-day shift

Shift Hours Formula

The calculator finds the elapsed time between the start and end of the shift and then subtracts the unpaid break.

Net Shift Hours = End Time โˆ’ Start Time โˆ’ Unpaid Break

What Is a Shift Hours Calculator?

A Shift Hours Calculator calculates how long a work shift lasts based on a starting time and ending time. It can also subtract unpaid breaks to show the actual amount of working time.

This is useful for checking work schedules, timesheets, employee shifts, freelance work sessions, and other time-based records.

Example:

Start Time: 9:00 AM
End Time: 5:30 PM
Break: 30 minutes

Elapsed time = 8 hours 30 minutes
Net work time = 8 hours

How to Use the Shift Hours Calculator

1

Enter Shift Times

Select the time your shift starts and the time it ends.

2

Add Your Break

Enter the total number of unpaid break minutes taken during the shift.

View net work time, decimal hours, total minutes, regular hours, and overtime.

How Are Shift Hours Calculated?

The basic calculation subtracts the start time from the end time. Any unpaid break is then deducted from the elapsed shift.

Example calculation:

7:30 AM to 4:00 PM = 8 hours 30 minutes

8 hours 30 minutes โˆ’ 30-minute break

= 8 hours worked

The result is also converted to decimal hours so it can be used more easily in time records, spreadsheets, and hourly calculations.

Overnight Shift Hours

An overnight shift begins on one day and ends on the next. For example, a shift beginning at 10:00 PM and ending at 6:00 AM crosses midnight.

When automatic overnight calculation is enabled, an end time earlier than the start time is treated as occurring on the following day.

Example:

Start = 10:00 PM
End = 6:00 AM

Elapsed shift = 8 hours

Regular Hours and Overtime

The calculator includes a customizable regular-hours limit. If net shift time exceeds that limit, the excess is displayed separately as overtime.

Example:

Net shift = 10 hours
Regular-hours limit = 8 hours

Regular hours = 8
Displayed overtime = 2 hours

This overtime result is a mathematical breakdown only. Actual overtime eligibility and pay rules depend on applicable employment rules, agreements, and local law.

How to Convert Shift Time to Decimal Hours

To convert hours and minutes into decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours.

Formula:

Decimal Hours = Hours + (Minutes รท 60)

7 hours 30 minutes = 7 + (30 รท 60)

= 7.50 decimal hours

Common Uses of a Shift Hours Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the hours in a work shift?

Subtract the shift start time from the end time and then subtract any unpaid break duration.

Can this calculator handle overnight shifts?

Yes. With automatic overnight calculation enabled, an end time earlier than the start time is treated as occurring on the following day.

How do I calculate an unpaid break?

Enter the total unpaid break duration in minutes. The calculator deducts those minutes from the elapsed shift time.

What is an 8-hour shift in decimal hours?

Exactly 8 hours is 8.00 decimal hours.

What is 8 hours and 30 minutes in decimal hours?

Eight hours and 30 minutes equals 8.50 decimal hours.

What happens if the break is longer than the shift?

The calculator shows an error because an unpaid break cannot exceed the total elapsed shift duration.

Can I change the regular-hours limit?

Yes. Enter your preferred number of regular hours before calculating the shift.

Does this calculator determine overtime pay?

No. It separates time mathematically using the limit you enter. It does not determine legal overtime eligibility or pay rates.
