What Is a Weighted GPA Calculator?

A Weighted GPA Calculator estimates your grade point average while considering both your grades and the difficulty of your courses. Advanced courses can receive additional grade points, which means a weighted GPA may be higher than a standard unweighted GPA.

This calculator supports Regular, Honors, and AP/IB course levels. It also considers course credits, so classes with more credits have a proportionally greater effect on the final result.

Regular

Uses the standard 4.0 grade scale without an additional course difficulty bonus.

Honors

Adds 0.5 points to the standard grade-point value in this calculator.

AP / IB

Adds 1.0 point to the standard grade-point value for advanced AP or IB courses.

How Does the Weighted GPA Calculator Work?

The calculator converts each selected letter grade into grade points. It then adds the selected course-level bonus and multiplies the result by the number of course credits.

Weighted GPA = Total Weighted Quality Points ÷ Total Credits

After all courses have been processed, the calculator divides the combined weighted quality points by the total number of credits.

Weighted GPA vs. Unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA normally evaluates grades using the same standard scale regardless of course difficulty. A weighted GPA can assign additional points to advanced classes such as Honors, AP, or IB courses.

For example, an A may equal 4.0 in a regular class, 4.5 in an Honors class, and 5.0 in an AP or IB class under the weighting system used by this calculator.

Why Do Course Credits Matter?

Credits determine how much influence a course has on your overall GPA. A course worth more credits contributes more quality points than a lower-credit course with the same grade.

Important: Schools and universities can use different GPA scales, grade values and weighting policies. Use this calculator as an estimate and check your institution's official grading policy when you need an exact GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a weighted GPA?
A weighted GPA considers course difficulty in addition to grades. Advanced courses may receive extra grade points.
Can a weighted GPA be above 4.0?
Yes. If a school awards additional points for advanced courses, a student's weighted GPA can exceed 4.0.
How are Honors courses weighted?
This calculator adds 0.5 grade points to the base grade value for courses selected as Honors.
How are AP and IB courses weighted?
This calculator adds 1.0 grade point to the standard grade value for AP or IB courses.
Does every school use the same weighted GPA scale?
No. GPA scales and weighting rules can differ between schools, colleges and universities.
Why does this calculator ask for credits?
Credits allow courses to affect the overall GPA according to their academic weight. Higher-credit courses therefore contribute more to the final calculation.
