How Brick Quantity Is Calculated
The calculator estimates the effective volume occupied by one brick plus the surrounding mortar joint. The total masonry wall volume is then divided by this nominal brick-module volume.
The final purchase quantity is rounded upward after applying the selected brick waste allowance.
How Mortar Volume Is Estimated
Once the approximate number of bricks is known, the actual solid brick volume is subtracted from the masonry wall volume. The remaining portion provides an estimate of wet mortar volume.
Dry mortar ingredients generally occupy more volume than compacted wet mortar. This calculator applies an approximate dry-volume factor of 1.33 for material estimation.
Cement and Sand Mortar Mix Calculation
A mortar ratio such as 1:4 represents one part cement to four parts sand by volume. The total dry mortar volume is split according to the selected ratio.
Cement weight is estimated using a bulk density of approximately 1,440 kg per cubic meter. Actual density and batching practices can vary.
Brick Mortar Calculation Example
Suppose a wall is 10 meters long, 3 meters high, and 115 mm thick. The wall volume is approximately 3.45 cubic meters before accounting for any openings.
Using bricks measuring 230 × 110 × 75 mm with a 10 mm mortar joint, the calculator estimates the number of nominal masonry units that fit within that wall volume. It then separates the solid brick volume from the mortar portion.
If a 1:4 mortar mix is selected, the estimated dry mortar is divided into one part cement and four parts sand. A waste allowance is then applied to the brick requirement.
How to Account for Doors and Windows
This calculator assumes that the full wall dimensions entered contain masonry. If the wall includes large doors, windows, or other openings, subtract their area or volume before using the final material estimate.
For greater accuracy on complex walls, divide the project into simpler wall sections, calculate each section separately, and add the results together.
Why Include a Brick Waste Allowance?
Some bricks may be cut, broken, damaged, or unsuitable during masonry work. A waste allowance adds extra bricks to the calculated theoretical quantity.
Actual waste varies according to bond pattern, brick quality, wall layout, workmanship, transportation, and the number of cuts required.
