The average citation count per paper is calculated by dividing the total number of citations by the number of publications included. For example, 100 citations across five publications results in an average of 20 citations per publication.

Can citation counts differ between databases?

Yes. Citation counts can differ because academic databases have different coverage and indexing methods. A citation count from one database should therefore be understood as the number reported by that specific database at the time it was checked.
