What Is a Concrete Footing Calculator?
A concrete footing calculator estimates the amount of concrete required to construct one or more foundation footings. The quantity is calculated from the footing length, width, thickness, and number of identical footings.
This calculator supports both square and rectangular footing geometry. It can also add a waste allowance and provide approximate concrete weight, bag quantity, and material cost for project planning.
What Does This Calculator Estimate?
- Surface area of one footing
- Concrete volume per footing
- Total volume for multiple footings
- Additional volume from waste allowance
- Cubic yards or cubic meters required
- Approximate concrete weight
- Approximate number of concrete bags
- Estimated material cost
How to Use the Concrete Footing Calculator
Select Footing Type
Choose square or rectangular footing and select the measurement system used for your project.
Enter Dimensions
Enter the footing length, width when required, concrete thickness, and number of identical footings.
Calculate Concrete
Add a waste allowance and calculate total volume, concrete weight, bags, and estimated cost.
Concrete Footing Volume Formula
A rectangular footing is mathematically a rectangular prism. Its concrete volume is calculated by multiplying length by width by thickness after converting all measurements to compatible units.
For multiple identical footings, multiply the volume of one footing by the total number of footings. The waste allowance is then applied to the combined theoretical volume.
How to Calculate Concrete for a Square Footing
A square footing has equal length and width. When Square Footing is selected, this calculator uses the entered side dimension for both directions automatically.
For example, a footing that measures 4 feet by 4 feet and is 12 inches thick contains 16 cubic feet of concrete before any waste allowance is added.
How to Calculate a Rectangular Concrete Footing
Rectangular footings use different values for length and width. Enter each dimension separately along with the average thickness to determine the concrete quantity.
When working in imperial units, thickness entered in inches is converted to feet before calculating the volume. Cubic feet are then converted to cubic yards for ready-mix concrete estimates.
Concrete Footing Calculation Example
Consider a rectangular footing measuring 6 feet long by 3 feet wide and 12 inches thick. Since 12 inches equals 1 foot, its concrete volume is calculated directly from the three dimensions.
Four identical footings require approximately 2.667 cubic yards before waste. Adding a 10% allowance increases the estimated requirement to about 2.93 cubic yards.
Why Add Extra Concrete to a Footing Estimate?
The mathematical volume assumes perfectly formed dimensions. Actual footing excavations and forms may contain small dimensional differences that increase the amount of concrete required.
Concrete may also be lost through spillage, pumping, irregular excavation surfaces, and placement variations. A user-selected waste allowance provides additional material in the estimate to account for these conditions.
How Much Does Footing Concrete Weigh?
Concrete weight can be approximated by multiplying volume by the assumed density of normal-weight concrete. This calculator uses approximately 2,400 kilograms per cubic meter or 150 pounds per cubic foot.
This is a material estimate rather than a structural load calculation. Actual concrete density varies according to mix design, aggregates, moisture, and concrete type.
How Many Concrete Bags Are Needed for a Footing?
Smaller footings may sometimes be poured using bagged concrete. The calculator converts the required concrete volume into cubic feet and divides that quantity by an approximate yield per bag.
| Bag Size | Approximate Yield | Approximate Bags per yd³ |
|---|---|---|
| 40 lb | 0.30 ft³ | About 90 |
| 60 lb | 0.45 ft³ | About 60 |
| 80 lb | 0.60 ft³ | About 45 |
Concrete bag yields are approximate and can vary between products. Always use the actual yield printed on the manufacturer's packaging when ordering material.
Metric and Imperial Footing Measurements
| Measurement | Imperial | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Length & Width | Feet | Meters |
| Thickness | Inches | Centimeters |
| Footing Area | ft² | m² |
| Concrete Volume | yd³ | m³ |
| Concrete Weight | lb | kg |
Concrete Footing Quantity vs. Footing Design
A concrete footing quantity calculator answers how much concrete is needed for dimensions that are already known. It does not determine what those footing dimensions should be for a particular building.
Actual footing design can depend on structural loads, allowable soil bearing pressure, settlement, groundwater, frost conditions, footing depth, bending, shear, reinforcement, concrete strength, seismic requirements, and local building regulations.
Therefore, use this calculator for material quantity estimation rather than as a replacement for structural or geotechnical design.
Concrete Footing Calculator FAQs
Multiply the footing length by its width and thickness after converting all measurements to compatible units. Multiply that result by the number of identical footings if necessary.
Calculate the footing volume in cubic feet and divide by 27, because one cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet.
Yes. Enter the number of identical footings and the calculator multiplies the volume of one footing by that quantity.
Yes. Select Square Footing and enter the side dimension. The calculator automatically uses that dimension as both the footing length and width.
Yes. Enter a waste allowance percentage and the calculator adds the additional volume to the theoretical footing quantity.
Yes. Enter your price per cubic yard in Imperial mode or price per cubic meter in Metric mode to calculate an approximate material cost.
No. This calculator estimates concrete quantity for dimensions you already know. Required footing dimensions depend on structural and geotechnical design considerations.
No. Reinforcement quantity and design require separate engineering calculations and are not included in this concrete volume calculator.
