Concrete Slab Volume Formula

The basic volume of a rectangular concrete slab is calculated by multiplying its length, width, and thickness. All measurements must first be converted into compatible units.

V = L × W × T V = concrete volume, L = slab length, W = slab width, T = slab thickness.

If the measurements are entered in feet, the thickness in inches must first be divided by 12 to convert it to feet. The resulting cubic feet can then be divided by 27 to calculate cubic yards.

Concrete Slab Calculation Example

Suppose a concrete slab is 20 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 4 inches thick. First convert the thickness to feet by dividing 4 by 12, which gives approximately 0.333 feet.

20 × 12 × 0.333 ≈ 80 ft³ 80 ft³ ÷ 27 ≈ 2.96 cubic yards

If a 10% waste allowance is added, the estimated concrete order becomes approximately 3.26 cubic yards. Actual ready-mix ordering may be rounded according to supplier requirements.

Why Add Extra Concrete for Waste?

Calculated slab dimensions represent an ideal geometric volume, but actual construction conditions are rarely perfect. Excavation depth, uneven base material, form movement, spillage, and thickness variations can increase the concrete requirement.

A waste allowance helps provide additional material for these differences. The appropriate allowance depends on slab size, workmanship, site conditions, and project requirements.
