Drywall Sheet Calculation Formula
The gross surface area is found by multiplying surface length by height or width and then multiplying by the number of identical surfaces.
Doors, windows, and other openings can then be subtracted to produce the net area requiring drywall.
Waste is added to the net area before dividing by the area of one drywall sheet.

Drywall Sheet Calculation Example
Suppose a wall is 30 feet long and 8 feet high. Its gross surface area is 240 square feet.
If doors and windows occupy 20 square feet, the net drywall area becomes 220 square feet.
A 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 square feet. With a 10% waste allowance, the adjusted area becomes 242 square feet, which requires about 7.56 sheets. The purchase estimate therefore rounds up to 8 sheets.
Should Doors and Windows Be Subtracted?
Large openings can be deducted when estimating drywall area because they reduce the total surface being covered. This calculator includes one field for the combined area of all openings.
Small openings may not reduce the number of sheets purchased because full panels still have to be cut around those areas. For small projects, leaving minor openings in the estimate can provide a practical buffer.
Why Add a Drywall Waste Allowance?
Sheet layouts rarely use every square foot perfectly. Cuts around doors, windows, corners, outlets, ceilings, and irregular surfaces can create pieces that are difficult to reuse.
Waste can also result from damaged boards and installation mistakes. The calculator allows the waste percentage to be changed based on project complexity.
How Are Drywall Screws Estimated?
The calculator multiplies the number of purchased sheets by an adjustable screws-per-sheet value. The default is only a rough estimating assumption.
Actual screw quantity depends on framing spacing, wall or ceiling application, board thickness, fastening pattern, edge requirements, and the installation specification being followed.
Using the Calculator for Walls and Ceilings
For a wall, use wall length as the first dimension and wall height as the second. If several walls are identical, use the number of surfaces field rather than calculating each one separately.
For a ceiling, enter the room length and width as the two surface dimensions. Sheet orientation and framing direction should still be considered when planning the actual installation.
