How EV Charging Cost Is Calculated
The first step is to determine how much energy must be stored in the battery. A 75 kWh battery charged from 20% to 80%, for example, receives 45 kWh of usable battery energy.
Charging is not completely efficient. Some energy is lost through the charging equipment, cables, battery management system and heat. The calculator therefore divides the battery energy by the selected charging efficiency.

Suppose an electric vehicle has a 75 kWh battery and is charged from 20% to 80%. With 90% charging efficiency and an electricity price of $0.16 per kWh, the calculation would look like this:

Home Charging vs Public Charging
Home EV Charging
Home charging is often calculated using your residential electricity rate. Time-of-use plans may offer lower prices during overnight or off-peak hours, which can reduce the cost of regular charging.
Public EV Charging
Public charging providers may charge per kWh, per minute or per session. Some stations also add connection, parking, membership or idle fees. Enter any fixed charge in the session fee field for a more complete estimate.
Charging Efficiency
The amount of electricity drawn from the grid is usually greater than the amount stored in the battery. Level 2 home chargers are commonly more efficient than low-power charging, but actual efficiency depends on the vehicle, charger, temperature and battery condition.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to fully charge an electric car?
The cost depends on battery capacity, electricity price and charging losses. Multiply the grid energy required by your electricity rate and add any charger or session fees.
Why is grid energy higher than battery energy?
Some electricity is lost as heat or used by the charging system. Charging efficiency accounts for this difference between energy drawn from the grid and energy stored in the battery.
What charging efficiency should I enter?
A value around 90% is a practical general estimate. Use a vehicle- or charger-specific figure when reliable charging data is available.
Does charging from 20% to 80% use 60% of the battery?
Yes. The battery receives energy equal to 60% of its usable capacity, although the charger draws additional energy from the grid because charging is not 100% efficient.
Can I calculate public charging costs?
Yes. Enter the public station's per-kWh price and add any connection or session charge in the fixed session fee field.
Does the calculator include taxes and idle fees?
Taxes and idle fees are not added automatically. You can include predictable fixed charges in the session fee field, but variable fees should be calculated separately.
How is the estimated driving range calculated?
The calculator multiplies the energy added to the battery by the vehicle efficiency entered in miles per kWh or kilometres per kWh.
Is charging an EV at home cheaper?
Home charging is frequently less expensive than rapid public charging, especially when an off-peak electricity rate is available. However, local prices and charging plans vary.
