CTR formula

How is email click-through rate calculated?

Email click-through rate measures the percentage of delivered emails that generated link clicks.

Email CTR formula Email CTR = (Total Clicks ÷ Delivered Emails) × 100

For example, suppose your campaign delivered 10,000 emails and generated 450 total clicks. Your email click-through rate would be:

Example calculation (450 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 4.50%

A 4.50% CTR means the campaign generated 4.5 clicks for every 100 emails delivered. Because total clicks can include repeat activity, you should also review unique CTR for a clearer picture of individual subscriber engagement.

Email metrics

Understand the results from this calculator

Email click-through rate

Email CTR divides total clicks by delivered emails. This metric includes repeated clicks and helps measure the overall volume of link interaction generated by your campaign.

Unique click-through rate

Unique CTR divides unique clickers by delivered emails. It shows what percentage of recipients clicked at least one link, regardless of how many times each person clicked.

Click-to-open rate

Click-to-open rate, often called CTOR, divides unique clicks by unique opens. It helps measure how effectively your email content converted openers into clickers.

Click conversion rate

Click conversion rate compares completed conversions with unique clickers. It helps evaluate whether your landing page and offer converted interested subscribers.

Performance guide

What is a good email click-through rate?

A good result depends on your industry, audience, email type, list quality, and how your email platform defines clicks. Use these ranges as a general interpretation rather than a universal industry standard.

Email CTR General assessment Recommended action
Below 1% Low engagement Review targeting, content relevance, and CTA visibility.
1% to 2% Developing performance Test stronger copy, improved design, and clearer offers.
2% to 5% Healthy engagement Continue testing subject-to-content alignment and CTA placement.
Above 5% Strong engagement Study the campaign and apply successful elements elsewhere.
Transactional emails, automated messages, newsletters, and promotional campaigns often produce different CTR results. Compare similar campaign types instead of treating every email as equal.
Optimization tips

How to improve your email click-through rate

A subscriber must understand the message, recognize its value, and feel motivated to take action before clicking.

  • Use one clear primary call to action instead of presenting too many competing options.
  • Place the main call-to-action button where subscribers can see it without excessive scrolling.
  • Write benefit-focused button text such as “Get the Guide” or “View My Results.”
  • Segment subscribers by interests, purchase history, behavior, location, or lifecycle stage.
  • Make sure the email content delivers what the subject line and preview text promised.
  • Use responsive layouts and buttons that are easy to tap on mobile devices.
  • Test different offers, content formats, CTA positions, and send times using controlled A/B tests.
  • Remove inactive or invalid contacts to improve list quality and campaign reporting accuracy.
Frequently asked questions

Email click-through rate calculator FAQs

Email click-through rate is the percentage of successfully delivered emails that generated link clicks. It helps marketers measure how effectively an email encouraged recipients to take action.
Delivered emails are generally more useful because messages that bounced never reached the recipient. Using delivered emails gives a more accurate view of engagement among reachable contacts.
Total clicks include every recorded click, including repeated clicks from the same subscriber. Unique clicks count each recipient only once, even when that person clicks several links.
Click-to-open rate divides unique clicks by unique opens and multiplies the result by 100. It measures how successfully your email content converted people who opened the message into people who clicked.
A low CTR may result from weak calls to action, irrelevant content, poor list segmentation, unclear offers, mobile usability problems, excessive links, or a mismatch between the subject line and email content.
Yes. A recipient may click multiple links or click the same link several times. This can make total clicks higher than the number of delivered emails, especially in highly interactive campaigns.
No. The calculation runs directly in your browser. The values entered into the calculator are not submitted to a database by this PHP page.
