What Is an Email Open Rate?

Email open rate is the percentage of delivered or sent emails that recipients opened. It is one of the most commonly monitored email marketing metrics because it helps marketers understand whether their subject lines, sender names, timing, and audience targeting encouraged recipients to view a campaign.

A higher open rate usually indicates that the message attracted attention. However, open rate should not be evaluated alone. Click-through rate, conversion rate, unsubscribe rate, bounce rate, and revenue per email provide additional information about campaign performance.

Email Open Rate Formula

Open Rate = (Unique Opens ÷ Emails Sent) × 100 Example: 2,500 unique opens ÷ 10,000 emails sent × 100 = 25%

Adjusted Email Open Rate Formula

The adjusted calculation excludes bounced emails because those messages were not successfully delivered and could not have been opened.

Adjusted Open Rate = Unique Opens ÷ (Emails Sent − Bounces) × 100 This calculation can provide a clearer picture of engagement among delivered emails.

Why Unique Opens Matter

A single subscriber may open the same message several times. Total opens count every recorded opening, while unique opens count each recipient only once. Therefore, unique opens are generally more suitable for calculating the email open rate.

Important Measurement Limitations

Email platforms usually track opens through a small image loaded when a recipient views a message. Privacy protections, blocked images, automated security scanners, and email client settings can affect the recorded number. For that reason, treat open rate as a useful directional metric rather than a perfect measurement of human engagement.

Metrics Included in This Calculator

The tool gives you several connected campaign metrics instead of displaying only one percentage.

Standard Open Rate

Shows the percentage of all sent emails that produced at least one unique open.

Adjusted Open Rate

Removes bounced emails and measures opens against successfully delivered messages.

Delivered Emails

Estimates how many messages reached recipients after subtracting reported bounces.

Unopened Emails

Displays the number of delivered emails without a recorded unique open.

Bounce Rate

Measures the percentage of sent messages that could not be delivered successfully.

Performance Indicator

Provides a simple engagement label and compares your result with an optional benchmark.

How to Improve Your Email Open Rate

Write Clear and Relevant Subject Lines

Tell subscribers what they can expect after opening the message. Avoid misleading claims, excessive capitalization, and unnecessary punctuation. A specific subject line often performs better than a vague promotional statement.

Use a Recognizable Sender Name

Recipients are more likely to open messages from a person or brand they recognize. Keep your sender name consistent and avoid frequently changing the address used for important campaigns.

Segment Your Audience

Send content based on subscriber interests, purchase history, location, engagement, or lifecycle stage. Relevant campaigns usually attract more attention than the same message sent to an entire database.

Test Your Sending Time

The best time depends on your audience. Test different weekdays and hours, then compare results over several campaigns rather than relying on a single send.

Maintain a Healthy Email List

Remove invalid addresses, monitor inactive subscribers, and use confirmed opt-in where appropriate. Better list quality can reduce bounces and improve overall campaign reporting.

Run Controlled A/B Tests

Test one major element at a time, such as the subject line, sender name, preview text, or delivery time. Changing several elements together makes it difficult to identify what caused the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about calculating and interpreting email open rates.

Divide unique email opens by the number of emails sent, then multiply the result by 100. An adjusted open rate divides unique opens by delivered emails instead.

You can calculate a standard rate using all sent emails, but excluding bounced emails provides an adjusted rate based on messages that were successfully delivered.

Total opens include repeated openings by the same recipient. Unique opens count each recipient only once, which makes them more suitable for an open-rate calculation.

Privacy features, blocked tracking images, automated security systems, cached images, and different email client settings can increase or reduce the number of recorded opens.

A unique open rate should not normally exceed 100 percent. A figure above 100 percent may indicate that total opens were used instead of unique opens or that campaign data was entered incorrectly.
