How to Use the Engine Displacement Calculator

  1. Enter the internal diameter of one cylinder in the Cylinder Bore field.
  2. Enter the piston's travel distance in the Piston Stroke field.
  3. Select millimeters, centimeters, or inches for each measurement.
  4. Choose the total number of cylinders in the engine.
  5. Select the preferred number of decimal places.
  6. Press Calculate Displacement to see the result in cc, liters, and cubic inches.

Engine Displacement Formula

One Cylinder Volume:
V = π ÷ 4 × Bore² × Stroke

Total Displacement:
D = V × Number of Cylinders
Example: An engine with an 86 mm bore, 86 mm stroke, and four cylinders has a total displacement of approximately 1,998 cc or 2.0 liters.

Understanding Engine Displacement

Engine displacement represents the combined swept volume of all pistons inside an internal combustion engine. It is commonly expressed in cubic centimeters, liters, or cubic inches.

Displacement does not measure the physical external size of an engine. It measures the volume displaced by the pistons as they move between the top and bottom of their cylinders.

Cylinder Bore

Bore is the internal cylinder diameter. A wider bore increases the area above the piston and raises displacement.

Piston Stroke

Stroke is the distance the piston travels. A longer stroke increases the swept volume of each cylinder.

Cylinder Count

Total engine displacement is the volume of one cylinder multiplied by the total number of cylinders.

Oversquare Engine

An oversquare engine has a bore larger than its stroke and may be designed for higher engine speeds.

Square Engine

A square engine has approximately equal bore and stroke measurements, producing a ratio close to 1.00.

Undersquare Engine

An undersquare engine has a longer stroke than bore and is often associated with stronger low-speed torque.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is engine displacement calculated?

First, calculate the swept volume of one cylinder using bore and stroke. Multiply this volume by the total number of cylinders to calculate complete engine displacement.

What is the difference between engine CC and liters?

Cubic centimeters and liters are two ways to express engine volume. One liter equals 1,000 cubic centimeters. Therefore, a 1,600 cc engine is a 1.6-liter engine.

What does cubic inch displacement mean?

Cubic inch displacement is an imperial measurement of engine capacity. One cubic inch is approximately equal to 16.387 cubic centimeters.

Does larger displacement always mean more horsepower?

Not always. Larger displacement may allow an engine to process more air and fuel, but power also depends on turbocharging, compression ratio, airflow, fuel system, engine speed, and tuning.

Can bore and stroke be entered in different units?

Yes. You can enter bore in one supported unit and stroke in another. The calculator converts both measurements to millimeters before calculating the final displacement.

What is the bore-to-stroke ratio?

The bore-to-stroke ratio is calculated by dividing bore diameter by stroke length. A ratio above 1.00 is oversquare, approximately 1.00 is square, and below 1.00 is undersquare.
