About the GPA Calculator

GPA stands for Grade Point Average — a single number that summarizes how you performed across all your courses. Each letter grade is converted to a point value on a 4.0 scale, then weighted by how many credit hours that course was worth, since a 4-credit course affects your GPA more than a 1-credit one.

Add the grade points for every course, divide by your total credit hours, and you get your GPA. This works the same way whether you're calculating a single semester or your full cumulative GPA across multiple terms.

Common questions about GPA calculations

Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add those totals together, then divide by your total credit hours. For example, a 4.0 in a 3-credit course and a 3.0 in a 4-credit course gives (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 ≈ 3.43. The calculator above does this automatically.

Semester GPA only includes courses from one term. Cumulative GPA includes every course you've taken across all terms, weighted by credit hours, which is the number most schools use for honors, scholarships, and graduation requirements.

First convert your percentage to a letter grade using your school's grading scale, then look up that letter's point value in the table above. Schools vary slightly in where the cutoffs fall, so check your syllabus if you need an exact conversion.

This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale used by most U.S. high schools and colleges. If your institution uses a 5.0 weighted scale or a different system, the same credit-weighted method still applies — just substitute your school's point values for each letter grade.
