What Is a Grade Needed Calculator?

A Grade Needed Calculator determines the average percentage you need on your remaining coursework to finish a course with a specific overall grade.

It uses your current grade, the percentage of the course already completed, and your desired final course grade.

How Does the Grade Needed Calculator Work?

Your current grade contributes only to the portion of the course that has already been completed. The calculator then determines what average is required from the remaining portion.

Grade Needed = [Desired Grade − (Current Grade × Completed Weight)] ÷ Remaining Weight

Course weights are converted from percentages to decimals before this formula is applied.

Grade Needed Example

Current grade: 82%

Course completed: 70%

Desired overall grade: 85%

Remaining weight: 30%

Required grade:

[85 − (82 × 0.70)] ÷ 0.30 = 92%

You would therefore need an average of 92% on the remaining 30% of the course to finish with an 85% overall grade.

What If the Required Grade Is Over 100%?

A result above 100% means the target grade cannot normally be reached through standard coursework if 100% is the maximum available score.

Extra credit, bonus points, grade replacement policies or other course rules could change the situation, so the official course policy should always be checked.

What If the Required Grade Is Below 0%?

A required grade of 0% or below means your existing performance is already sufficient to meet the selected target under the entered weighting assumptions.

Important: This calculator assumes your current grade accurately represents the completed portion of the course and that the remaining work makes up the rest of the course weight. Different grading systems may require a different method.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what grade I need?
Use your current grade, the weight of completed coursework, the remaining course weight and your desired overall grade. This calculator performs the weighted calculation for you.
Can I use this for a final exam?
Yes. If the final exam is the only remaining graded work, enter the percentage of the course completed before the final. The remaining percentage represents the final exam weight.
What does a required grade above 100% mean?
It means the selected target cannot normally be reached with a maximum standard score of 100% on the remaining work.
Why does course weight matter?
A score on work worth a large percentage of the course has more influence on the final grade than work worth a small percentage.
Can I copy the calculated result?
Yes. Click the round copy icon in the result area to copy your current grade, target grade, remaining weight and required grade.
