Select what you want to calculate and enter the known values.
PPM = (Component Amount ÷ Total Amount) × 1,000,000
What Is Parts Per Million (PPM)?
Parts per million, abbreviated as PPM, is a ratio used to describe very small quantities of one component relative to a larger total amount. One part per million represents one part of a component for every one million parts of the complete mixture.
PPM is dimensionless when both quantities are expressed using compatible units. It is widely used when ordinary percentages would produce inconveniently small numbers.
Parts Per Million Formula
To calculate PPM from two amounts, divide the component amount by the total amount and multiply the resulting fraction by one million.

PPM Calculation Example
Suppose a mixture contains 25 mg of a component in a total mixture mass of 1 kg. First convert the total mass to the same unit. One kilogram equals 1,000,000 mg.
PPM to Percent Conversion
Because one percent represents one part in one hundred while one PPM represents one part in one million, the two units can be converted using a simple relationship.
| PPM | Percent | Decimal Fraction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ppm | 0.0001% | 0.000001 |
| 10 ppm | 0.001% | 0.00001 |
| 100 ppm | 0.01% | 0.0001 |
| 1,000 ppm | 0.1% | 0.001 |
| 10,000 ppm | 1% | 0.01 |
| 1,000,000 ppm | 100% | 1 |
Useful PPM Equations
Calculate PPM
PPM = (component amount ÷ total amount) × 1,000,000.
Find Component
Component amount = (PPM ÷ 1,000,000) × total amount.
Convert to Percent
Percentage = PPM ÷ 10,000. Percent can be converted back using PPM = percent × 10,000.
Using the Correct Units for PPM
For a direct parts-per-million ratio, the numerator and denominator must represent comparable quantities. For example, a mass-to-mass PPM calculation should compare mass with mass after converting both values to compatible units.
