What Is a Percentile?

A percentile is a statistical value that shows the position of a number within a data set. It indicates the percentage of values that fall at or below a particular point in the sorted data.

For example, the 50th percentile is commonly known as the median. The 25th percentile represents the first quartile, while the 75th percentile represents the third quartile.

P25 = First Quartile (Q1)
P50 = Median (Q2)
P75 = Third Quartile (Q3)

How Does the Percentile Calculator Work?

This calculator sorts your data from the smallest value to the largest value and then finds the position of the requested percentile. When the percentile position falls between two values, linear interpolation is used to calculate a precise result.

  1. Enter all numerical values in your data set.
  2. Choose the percentile you want to calculate between 0 and 100.
  3. The calculator sorts the data in ascending order.
  4. The percentile position is calculated based on the number of values.
  5. If necessary, interpolation is performed between two data values.
  6. The final percentile value is displayed with calculation details.

Percentile Formula

This calculator uses a linear interpolation method to determine the requested percentile position.

Position = (P ÷ 100) × (n − 1)

Where P is the requested percentile and n is the total number of values in the sorted data set. If the resulting position falls between two values, the calculator interpolates between them.

Percentile Calculation Example

Consider the following sorted data:

10, 20, 30, 40, 50

To calculate the 50th percentile:

Position = (50 ÷ 100) × (5 − 1)
Position = 2

Since the position is exactly 2 using zero-based indexing, the percentile value is:

P50 = 30

Common Percentiles and Their Meaning

25th Percentile

The 25th percentile shows the value below which approximately 25% of the data values fall. It is often called the first quartile or Q1.

50th Percentile

The 50th percentile is the median. Approximately half of the values fall below it and half fall above it.

75th Percentile

The 75th percentile is known as the third quartile or Q3 and shows the value below which approximately 75% of the data falls.

90th and 95th Percentiles

Higher percentiles are commonly used to analyze performance, distributions, response times, financial data, and large statistical data sets.
