What Is a Return on Assets Calculator?
A Return on Assets Calculator measures how efficiently a business uses its assets to produce net income. Return on assets is commonly abbreviated as ROA and is used as a profitability and asset-efficiency ratio.
ROA connects a company's profit with the resources it controls. It can be useful when evaluating business performance over time or comparing companies with similar operations.
Average total assets are normally calculated using the beginning and ending asset balances for the reporting period.
How to Use the Return on Assets Calculator
1. Enter Net Income
Enter the company's net income for the financial period you are analyzing.

How Does the ROA Calculation Work?
The calculator first determines average total assets by adding beginning assets and ending assets and dividing the result by two. Net income is then divided by average total assets and multiplied by 100 to express ROA as a percentage.
Return on Assets Example
| Financial Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Net Income | $75,000 |
| Beginning Total Assets | $900,000 |
| Ending Total Assets | $1,100,000 |
In this example, the company generates approximately $7.50 of net income for every $100 of average assets.
How to Interpret Return on Assets
A positive ROA indicates that the company generated a profit relative to its asset base. A negative ROA indicates that the company recorded a net loss during the period.
| ROA Result | General Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Negative ROA | The business reported a net loss relative to its asset base. |
| 0% | The business generated no net income relative to average assets. |
| Positive ROA | The business generated positive net income from its assets. |
| Higher Positive ROA | Generally indicates more net income generated for each unit of assets. |
Why Is Return on Assets Important?
Return on assets helps evaluate whether a company's assets are being used productively. Businesses invest money in equipment, property, inventory, technology, cash, and other assets with the expectation that those resources will contribute to operations and profitability.
Tracking ROA over several reporting periods can help identify whether profitability relative to the asset base is improving or declining. Investors and analysts may also use ROA when comparing similar companies.
Return on Assets vs. Return on Equity
Return on assets and return on equity both measure profitability, but they focus on different financial resources.
Return on Assets (ROA)
ROA compares net income with the company's average total assets and focuses on how effectively the overall asset base generates profit.
Return on Equity (ROE)
ROE compares net income with shareholder equity and focuses on the return generated relative to owners' invested capital.
