What Is a Semester GPA Calculator?

A Semester GPA Calculator helps you estimate your grade point average for a single academic semester. It uses the grades earned in your courses together with their credit hours to calculate a credit-weighted GPA.

Courses with more credit hours have a greater impact on the final semester GPA than courses worth fewer credits. This makes the calculation more accurate than simply averaging your letter grades.

How Is Semester GPA Calculated?

Semester GPA is calculated by multiplying the grade-point value of each course by its credit hours. These quality points are then added together and divided by the total number of credit hours.

Semester GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Semester GPA Example

Suppose you receive an A in a 3-credit course. An A is worth 4.0 grade points, so that course contributes 12 quality points. If another 3-credit course has a B worth 3.0 points, it contributes 9 quality points. The calculator performs this process for every course before calculating the final GPA.

GPA Grade Scale Used

This calculator uses the following common 4.0 GPA scale. Individual schools and universities may use slightly different grade-point values.

Letter Grade Grade Points
A+ 4.0
A 4.0
A- 3.7
B+ 3.3
B 3.0
B- 2.7
C+ 2.3
C 2.0
C- 1.7
D+ 1.3
D 1.0
D- 0.7
F 0.0

Why Do Credit Hours Affect Semester GPA?

Credit hours determine how much each class contributes to your GPA. A four-credit class has more influence on the final result than a one-credit class because it represents a larger portion of the semester's academic workload.

Semester GPA vs. Cumulative GPA

Semester GPA measures academic performance during one semester. Cumulative GPA combines eligible courses or semesters across a longer period of study. Because they cover different time periods, your semester GPA and cumulative GPA may be different.

Please note: GPA policies vary between educational institutions. Some schools use different values for plus/minus grades, repeated courses, pass/fail classes, withdrawals or other special grades. Check your institution's official policy when you require an exact academic GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a semester GPA?
Semester GPA is the grade point average calculated from eligible courses completed during a particular academic semester.
How do I calculate my semester GPA?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add all quality points, and divide the total by the total credit hours.
