What Is a Typing Speed Calculator?

A Typing Speed Calculator measures how quickly and accurately you type. Typing speed is commonly expressed as words per minute, or WPM.

This calculator tracks your elapsed typing time, characters, errors and accuracy to provide a useful summary of your performance.

How Is Typing Speed Calculated?

A common typing-test convention treats five typed characters, including spaces, as one standard word.

Raw WPM = (Typed Characters ÷ 5) ÷ Minutes

This calculator also calculates a net WPM estimate using correctly typed characters.

Net WPM = (Correct Characters ÷ 5) ÷ Minutes

Typing Speed Example

If you correctly type 200 characters in one minute:

200 ÷ 5 = 40 standard words

Your calculated typing speed is approximately 40 WPM.

How Is Typing Accuracy Calculated?

Accuracy compares correctly typed characters with the total number of characters you typed during the test.

Accuracy = (Correct Characters ÷ Typed Characters) × 100

Typing Speed Reference

Typing speed can vary considerably depending on experience, keyboard type, language, text difficulty, and whether the test contains punctuation or unfamiliar words. The ranges below are therefore best used as general reference bands, not strict standards.

Typing Speed General Reference
Below 20 WPM Developing speed
20–39 WPM Moderate pace
40–59 WPM Comfortable pace
60–79 WPM Fast pace
80+ WPM Very fast pace

Tips for Improving Typing Speed

  • Focus on accuracy before trying to increase speed.
  • Practice regularly in short, focused sessions.
  • Learn comfortable keyboard positioning and use multiple fingers.
  • Avoid repeatedly looking down at the keyboard when possible.
  • Practice punctuation, numbers, and capital letters as well as simple words.
  • Track both WPM and accuracy instead of focusing on speed alone.

Typing Test Metrics

Your typing test measures several useful performance metrics.

Words Per Minute

Measures your estimated net typing speed.

Accuracy

Shows the percentage of typed characters that match the text.

Typing Errors

Counts character positions that do not match the sample.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does WPM mean?
WPM means words per minute. It is a common measurement used to describe typing speed.
How is WPM calculated?
A common method treats five characters as one standard word and divides the resulting word count by the elapsed typing time in minutes.
What is raw WPM?
Raw WPM measures typing speed before considering whether each typed character is correct.
Does accuracy matter in a typing test?
Yes. A high typing speed with many errors may be less useful than a slightly slower speed with strong accuracy.
Which typing test duration should I use?
Short tests are useful for quick practice, while longer tests can provide a more stable view of sustained typing performance.
Can I copy my typing test result?
Yes. After finishing the test, click the round copy icon in the result panel to copy your WPM, accuracy, errors, and other results.
