What Is a Wave Period?

A wave period is the time required for one complete cycle of a repeating wave to pass a fixed point. It is normally represented by the symbol T and measured in seconds.

Period and frequency describe the same repeating motion from different perspectives. Frequency tells you how many cycles occur each second, while period tells you how long one cycle lasts.

T is the period in seconds and f is the frequency in hertz.

Wave Period from Wavelength and Speed

When wavelength and wave speed are available, period can be found by dividing wavelength by speed:

Example Calculation

A wave with a frequency of 50 Hz completes 50 cycles every second. Its period is:

T = 1 ÷ 50 = 0.02 seconds, which is equal to 20 milliseconds.
