What Is a Weighted Average?
A weighted average is an average in which some values contribute more to the final result than others. Instead of treating every number equally, the calculation assigns a weight based on its importance, quantity, frequency, or percentage.
The calculator multiplies each value by its weight, adds all the weighted products, and divides that total by the sum of the weights.
Example: A student receives scores of 80, 90,
and 70. The assessments are worth 20%, 50%, and 30%. The weighted
average is 82 because the score of 90 has the largest influence.
Weighted Average Formula
The standard formula is: Σ(Value × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight).
The weights do not have to total 100. For example, weights of 2, 3, and 5 produce the same result as weights of 20%, 30%, and 50% because their proportions are identical.
